What is the title story “Alternate Forms of Life” about?
It centers on Alexander, a character on the autism spectrum with Asperger’s. The story is one Cannon considers especially personal to write, and it aims to show that people on the autism spectrum are complex, valuable individuals — balancing everyday struggles with wit and heart.
So this short story collection is eclectic. It holds many genres.
The title story is one of my favorite. Get to know someone with autism. Not their diagnosis. And yet many have obsessions.
The obsession my main character Alexander has is fire suppression systems. I knew a kid with Aspbergers that was obsessed with elevators. Another that was obsessed with dyson vacuum cleaners.
I do not have autism. Yet when I talked with someone that was redoing our sprinklers at work, I was interested in his daily life. Thus the story was born.

This collection of short stories is a nice mix, with some fantasy tales at the end. The title story, “Alternate Forms of Life,” is about Alexander, a character with Asperger’s, showing that people on the autism spectrum have value and complexity. While there are some stereotypes for humor, the story still resonates with those familiar with autism. The other stories are also unique, each inspired by different ideas. Overall, it’s an interesting and creative collection.
