In September of 2021, I was named the Poet Laureate of Oshkosh. I don’t believe that I am the best poet in Oshkosh. I may not be the best poet in my house. Yet I believe I am a great fit for the role.
I am somewhat qualified to be the poet laureate. I have many poems published in journals. I have many more poems that I want to publish and arrange into chapbooks. I have many more poems to write.
I am dedicated to growing the writing community in Oshkosh. I am part of a writers club and a volunteer at the Lakefly Writers Conference. I cohost the Author Showcase on our public access channel. Despite whatever Covid brings, I want to work with the Oshkosh Public library and explore poetry with people.
When Mayor Palmeri spoke of the role of the poet laureate to be that of healing our divide, such as Amanda Gorman’s poem, my thought was, Oh my!” But what a great goal. I will work toward that.
However, my biggest goal for the next two years though is to consistently spell laureate correctly.
