I used to hurry a lot
I used to worry a lot.
Simple lyrics from the song The Long Run by The Eagles. I really liked that song. But recently I heard that and it struck me as such a great line that does what poetry should do.
Poems need to be musical. The next word and the next line is dictated by the rhythm of the song. So the lines are pretty catchy. You get repetition and the internal rhyme. They go together.
Yet, a good poem still has to hold truth. It has to resonate. It can’t just have the right sounding words. These 2 lines, to me, resonated. When I was younger hurrying and worrying went together.
I still do, but I used to do it too. (Nod to Mitch Hedberg).
I don’t know that I put the two things as going together, but they do for me. I was driven to be busy and push forward and hope to be successful. Worrying went along with that. Part of it was that I worried, so I hurried. The other part is that I hurried and that caused me to worry.
All this time and I just liked the song. Do you have a song/musician that you grew to have an appreciation for the poetry of their lyrics?
