Here is an admission. I did judge people that outwardly expressed an alternative lifestyle. I would see people that dressed outlandishly and had multiple piercings and weird hair styles. I looked sideways at people that “displayed gayness.” Not in a I want to take away their rights way or even I want them to be different sort of way.
I just wanted to avoid them and for them to avoid me. But through attending poetry readings and just meeting different types of people, I realized this was just bias.
I have grown. I was blessed to meet the people that used to be “those people”
I attended the Hands-off protests. All kinds of people attended. And those people I used to judge made me smile when I saw them. I was happy they were there. I was happy they exist.
Because I could get beyond my bias. I think we as a people are on our way to doing that. But desperate people are leading our country right now. They are winning, but eventually they will go away.
That is why movements like LBGTQ+ are important. With movements like the democratic party embrace all people, it makes us be together and through that we come together.
