Recently, I ended up in the emergency room of a hospital in Milwaukee. It was not an emergency. My brother just needed a new picc line at four thirty and that was the only place to send him. We were there for like four hours and we still not seen.
To me this shows how we do provide free healthcare for many people. We are really just doing it in a stupid, ignorant way.
The people in the waiting room were there for hours. They were so resigned to it. Because they had no place to go. And they were certainly not in any shape to get a job that would afford them health care. So they went and they waited. Hour after hour.
The system was overloaded. Rightfully so, the hospital has to take them in the emergency room. The people without insurance had a medical need but had no place other to go. So the hospital cannot have additional staff to handle the need. If you owned a pizza place and every other patron ate for free, you would not be able to hire more staff.
You would have to raise the price for the paying people.
For the emergency room, a person with insurance and the person without insurance have to wait while more pressing medical needs are taken care of.
However if everyone had access to good healthcare through universal healthcare, then they could have preventative care. Regular checkups that would be much cheaper and scheduled.
Those that have healthcare have to wait hour after hour for nonacute needs. Those that don’t have to as well. I am sure many people feel that they should not expect better. They should just take what they can get and not complain. But the problem is we are punishing ourselves along with them. Somebody has to absorb the cost.
In fact, what we are doing amounts to tax. As a nation we are spending money just so we can feel that no one gets something from us. We are paying that tax so that many can remain in their bubble of self-righteousness.
