Understanding Mental Health and Violence: Key Insights

Here is a post on Facebook in response to the mass shooting at the Minneapolis Church

“It’s a mental health issue. These kids are constantly fed affirmations that there’s nothing wrong with them and then they get medication to change their brain chemistry. Etc etc.

It’s akin to telling a schizophrenic that you’re okay and yeas I hear the voices and sometimes see things that aren’t there. Then shove propaganda down their throats and leave them to their own devices.

Same. A schizophrenic patient needs help. A trans person needs help. These are the things they need. They do not need a therapist who says you’re fine the way you are. Otherwise, they get emboldened. The next thing you know, they’re writing a demonic sounding manifesto accompanied by a video.”

Here is my response:

all the kids are given too much affirmation but not all of them go killing. So your point is ridiculous. Was this a trans kid? No so leave your bigotry out of it.

Here is further thoughts about this post:

“It’s a mental health issue.  they get medication to change their brain chemistry.  So then you are against medication,” but then say

“A schizophrenic patient needs help.”

What kind of help? Because the most effective help is medication.

“These kids are constantly fed affirmations that there’s nothing wrong with them.”  Kids should be told they is something wrong with them?  If you want to help kids, yes, hold them accountable. But the only way for them to improve is to help them build on their positive traits. Everyone has them. You want these traits to be so ingrained and useful they crowd out their faults.

“It’s akin to telling a schizophrenic that you’re okay. Yes, I hear the voices. Sometimes I see things that aren’t there.” How is that?  Schizophrenia is a complex interaction of genetic, environmental, and brain chemistry factors. You seem to be saying something unclear. Well, all I gather is that you think our evils result from not telling kids they are shits.

A lot of evil has come from telling kids they are bad.

I’ve worked with children with mental illness for 27 years.  Behavioral problems come from trauma, physical and mental abuse, and exposure to that. Not being told good job.  It is a complex issue. Too many want an easy answer to spout off. They want to feel like they have the answers.
