I think the distrust of the media comes from people that sowed the skepticism of media because it benefits them. It began with the The Tea Party Movement . They wanted people to distrust the media so that they would distrust them. Social media benefits from people turning to the information that supports their confirmation bias. Media is flawed like any institution, but it is still needed.
