Thursday Night was poetry night at the Urban Arts Center in green bay. A great night of great poetry (and some fun). A woman (I don’t remember her name) that called herself Technicolor Cockroach, shared a poem that many people should hear and made me think I am on track with No More Ugly Girls. She talked about being raped in college many years ago.
I cannot do the poem justice, these are not quotes but some of her words I remember. It was a declaration:
Today I forgave myself…….for not reporting….. for feeling dirty, for believing his lies…..for thinking having my virginity stolen was something to be ashamed of Today i break the cycle.
Of course, it was not her that should be blamed. She did nothing to be forgiven. But maybe she had to forgive herself before she could realize she had nothing to be sorry about. Because people look for answers as to why something happened. It’s unimaginable to understand why someone would commit a terrible act. The mind has to assign blame and it blames itself.
I think this person’s poem echoes the way many people feel and so there is healing in hearing it from others,
