Here are some questions about Shattered by Thomas Cannon.
What is the novel Shattered about?
Shattered by Thomas Cannon is a gritty psychological fiction novel following Mikey Haskell, an oversized, mid-1990s stand-up comedian in the Twin Cities who suffers an intense mental breakdown after a devastating heartbreak. Instead of recovering, Mikey retreats into a primal, animalistic persona that bleeds from his personal life directly onto the comedy stage, exploring the razor-thin line between human brilliance and animal regression.
What are the main themes of Thomas Cannon’s Shattered?
The core themes of the book focus heavily on the psychology of alienation, the grotesque reality of human heartbreak, and the concept of “shattering”—a comedy term for breaking down an audience, which mirrors Mikey’s own internal collapse. It balances dark humor with a tragic look at how individuals deal with internalized guilt and societal rejection.
Where does the story take place?
The book serves as a piece of vivid Midwestern fiction, set explicitly against the backdrop of the Minneapolis and St. Paul (Twin Cities) comedy circuit during the mid-90s.
Why is Shattered set in the Twin Cities?
I set Shattered in the Twin Cities. I lived there for a year and found it a nice place to live and I wanted to capture it. It has city downtowns, but also quiet neighborhoods and prosperous suburbs. You could only buy 2/3 beer on Sundays and did not have a lot of bars (unlike Wisconsin) The nightclubs were often connected to bowling alleys.
When is Shattered set? Why?
Shattered is set in 1995.
We can be more isolated today with technology. However, in the time before cell phones and even free long distance, anyone on the road such as a stand-up might go days without speaking with anyone. Mikey Haskell, and goes on the road for six months and that is a long time to be alone. It is also a way to mark how he sees his family and friends after that six month period. He does not have Facebook or even a laptop to see photos of his siblings.
The time frame of the comedy scene in the 90s was important to me. And interesting. Just as the comedy scene is past his peak, Mikey feels past his peak in life. He is just out of his college days where he felt he had everything.
The story could be set in the 2020’s. But it would be a different story. It would be about using technology- Tik Tok, etc to distract and numb.
How does Mikey Haskell’s return home to the Twin Cities act as a catalyst for his psychological breakdown?
The geographic transitions between the rootless isolation of highway transit and the domestic confinement of his hometown of Duluth, Minnesota track his mental decline. The twin cities serve as a symbol for the common believe people have-
I will be happy when____
They delay being happy and pin their hopes on being happy when something happens. Mikey believes he will be happy when he gets back to the Twin Cities.
The twin cities are an urban center like any other city in America. And yet it has green spaces and the river. An astonishing 99% of residents in both Minneapolis and St. Paul live within a 10-minute walk of a park. These places call to Mikey. He begins his journey into psychosis at the city center. Seeing business professionals that look good and have it all. It makes him want to escape the judgement. This leads him to residential neighborhoods where the family houses mock him.
He eventually hides in some shrubbery in a neighborhood park. He knows it is odd and yet he finds some peace.
Mikey is reminded of his wounded humanity by being in the city and around people. Yet, with the greenery of the Twin Cities, he has a way to escape it (and unfortunately this drives him further into mental illness.
How would modern geographic tracking or digital communication ruin the slow-burn distance built between Mikey, Karen, and Alaine.
The job as a comedian is different today. They have to maintain a social media presence- posting on Facebook, and Instagram. It is still a lonely journey, but today he would be able to face time with his friends and sisters. Socializing on the road would be easier by instant messaging.
He might also feel more connected seeing posts by people, making him feel closer to home.
How effectively do the physical layouts of the 1995 comedy clubs (the separation of the backstage area, the spotlight, and the heckler filled audience) mirror Mikey’s descent into his primitive “caveman” persona?
For Mikey, the stage is the only place he feels good. Secure. Part of his confidence comes from the comradery of the other comics. Thise people hanging out with the staff of the comedy club is his tribe. Once he feels distanced from them, the spotlight becomes a trap where he can do nothing to fight back against the hecklers. As he intentionally loses himself, he embraces the base form of comedy. His audience mirrors his raunchy comedy, and he mirrors his audience.
