Understanding Welfare Mindsets: Rationalization in Society

People Think they are Different

What holds people on welfare back? Many things and many different things, of course. But for the sake of argument, let me generalize. I think that they have errors in their thinking. People rationalize their behaviors. As a result, they continue to hold these erroneous thoughts.  In fact, when I was poor and cashing in the recycling at work for extra money, I was subject to these thoughts. Society is unfair. It’s stacked against me. I have no hope so why not just try to numb myself in different ways.

So I think people on welfare rationalize why they should not change. Why they should not even consider a way of acting. Why do I think they rationalize?

Because everyone does it.

So I see similarities between people on welfare and people that voted for trump. Rationalization disregards any information that might change their mind.  They believe they do not need to change their mind. After all, society is to blame.  It is unfair and biased against me.  A simple working person is attacked by it.

I am not necessarily saying that it is outlandish to believe that.  Liberals are also a victim of their own rationalizations. But I think this argument is pertinent toward Trump because he has enough bad things proven against him but people do not abandon him.

I would not make this argument for somebody that supported Mark Rubio, for example. But I do believe it is rationalization. It makes conservatives think society is terrible. They believe we are a nation losing all morals and values. I think that the conservative movement pushes this narrative because it works. It scares people. Those people that don’t like things that are not similar to themselves.

Conservatives believe that our nation is losing our values because they are looking for evidence for confirmation. Liberals are looking for evidence that people want to turn our nation into a bunch of Christian Nationalists because…. people are admitting it as well. Okay some of the liberals beliefs have to come from confirmation bias, but as one, I have trouble seeing it.
