Does Your Family Ignore Your Accomplishments?

Recently my Dad asked me, “What have you been writing lately?”

This question gets asked by my family so little, that I hesitated to answer it. But I have a new book called No More Ugly Girls. So I was thought I would finally get a little recognition from my family.

I love my dad and he’s a great guy. The most caring man I’ve even known. But in his old age he gets a little distracted and is not able to follow conversation. This is how a conversation went.

What are you writing lately?

I said I’m writing about this person who’s made a lot of mistakes. (ITs about a young woman trapped in cycles of behavior caused by trauma).

Dad replied, I know who you are talking about.

I said, oh yeah, you do? (Its written about friends that have a hidden strength that I wanted to pay homage to.

Dad replied, Yeah Donald Trump. Then he started talking about Donald Trump and how terrible he is. The talk around the kitchen table is almost always politics. Then he began talking about watching Youtube and switching to watching CSI.

Finally he said, “Oh, but you were talking about your writing.

I said I had to go to the bathroom and went back inside the house. I had no faith that we would have a conversation about this book that is important to me.

Overall, my family never gets to talking about me. Which for the most part, I understand that I don’t put myself out there. I am uncomfortable with talking about me.

I think I secretly like the self-inflicted wound of my family not really knowing anything about me.

PS. Here is the book

  1. Your family may not be the kind of people who read your genre or even read books. You’d hope they would pay attention to your books, but I think it is very common for authors to have your problem. You’ve written many books and “No More Ugly Girls” looks like a great book.
