Why ‘Happy Wife, Happy Life’ Still Rings True

I tried to reword an often given piece of advice

Of course the original is the most succint:

Happy wife happy life.

I was in a mood, so this was my attempt to do it snarky and maybe funny.

The secret to a marriage is these two things:

Accept everything your wife says is smart

Accept that everything you say she thinks is stupid.

I have been wondering why this is often true. I think it is because woman are socialized to defer. So they have ideas (often they are right), but don’t feel they can just say it. They get frustrated waiting for a guy to realize their views on things and then get frustrated.

Often men want to confer but women have been taught not to say what is on their mind. Sometimes men want someone to take over. But they make the decision but are frustrated when their idea is critiqued.

The fix is equal, open discussions, but I that doesn’t seem to have gotten any easier.

This miscommunication is accidentally at the heart of my novella Love, Story.
