Living In Their Parents’ Basement

Our perceptions are not facts.  We often get our views wrong. And yet, I also fear that there is an epidemic of young people that fail to launch.  They do not support themselves and live with their parents.

And perhaps it is true that many young people are weak and babied by their parents.

Yet, I also wonder a couple of things.

Perhaps the young people that are “living in their parents basement” are around for things we do not consider.

Perhaps, these are people with disabilities. Kids that used to be housed in institutions.  It used to be a lot easier to be committed to institutes. John F. Kennedy’s sister got into some minor teenage problems and was lobotomized. Do they appear severely disabled? No Because we are better at caring for people with disabilities, educating them, and giving them good medical care. They are improved but cannot care for themselves.

Perhaps with a more compassionate society, they are simply still alive. Perhaps in the tough love era, they were kicked out of the house, had anxiety and committed suicide.

You can call it coddling, but you are passing judgment. Making your opinions the same as verified research and facts. Both of these are dangerous.

  1. You are right. The temptation to think you understand, that you know better, that your opinion is right, is very big but we deceive ourselves. We think we know but we don’t. Scientific research can certainly clarify.
