I think we all need to realize that we cannot make good decisions when we are stressed out. Yes, good stress (pressure doing a job we enjoy for example) can help us make good, instant choices. But when we are stressed out, The thinking part of the brain shuts down- we feel in danger and need to fight, run away, or freeze. Our brain also does not see a difference in physical or psychological threats.
So we need to do calming activities to lower our stress. We must also treat people with kindness. We cannot expect people to make better choices if we are putting pressure- anger- ultimatums-disappointment- on them. For young people, its worse as their brains are still developing.
